INTRODUCTION |
|
In July 2015, the annual Ramon Magsaysay awards were announced and among the five winners were two Indians – Anshu Gupta (Anshu) and Sanjiv Chaturvedi. Anshu won the award for ‘Goonj ‘, an organization involved in community development, disaster relief, and humanitarian aid. Anshu was recognized for bringing about a paradigm shift in the culture of giving in India, his creative leadership in treating cloth as a sustainable resource, and his selfless efforts toward generating a livelihood for the poor. His efforts reminded the world that true giving lies in respecting and preserving human dignity.
Goonj recycled household goods and clothes from urban areas in the country into useful products and distributed them to the needy in rural India.
